Forrest Gump (1994)

Forrest Gump is a romantic comedy drama based on Winston Groom’s novel of the same name from 1986. The movie which was released in 1994, was directed by Robert Zemeckis and stars many amazing actors like Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, and Sally Field. The story portrays several decades in the life of Forrest Gump, a naive and good-hearted man from Alabama who witnesses some of the defining events of the latter half of the 20th century in the United States. The movie won many awards and was a commercial success, so if you want to watch an amazing tear-jerker – Forrest Gump is definitely the best choice.

Imitation of Life (1959)

Imitation of Life is a 1959 romantic drama film directed by Douglas Sirk. The movie is an adaptation of Fannie Hurst’s novel of the same name and deals with issues of race, class, marital politics and gender. The movie tells the story of two single mothers, Annie and Lora and their two daughters. Annie is black while her daughter appears white and rejects any African-American heritage. Lora dreams of becoming a famous actress, but her significant other insist she stay at home. If you think the world’s grown past the toxic behavior of the 1950s, then watch this movie for a cruel reminder to the contrary.

Life Is Beautiful (1997)

Life is Beautiful is a 1997 Italian tragicomedy drama film directed by and starring Roberto Benigni. This heartwarming story about a father’s love for his son during their time at a Nazi concentration camps will definitely melt you into a puddle on the floor. The film is loosely based on Benigni’s family history and the actor even won the Academy Award for Best Actor. The film was a major critical and financial success, so if you haven’t seen this movie yet, you need to!

Hachi: A Dog’s Tale (2009)

Hachi: A Dog’s Tale is a 2009 drama film based on the true story of the loyal Akita Inu, Hachikō. The movie was directed by Lasse Hallström and stars Richard Gere, Joan Allen and Sarah Roemer. Gere plays professor Parker Wilson who finds a stray dog at the train station on a cold night and takes him into his home. He becomes attached to Hachi, who waits for him every day in front of the train station. If you are an animal lover, you’re going to love this heartwarming story of the loyal dog Hachi. Just make sure to have a box of tissues ready before watching the film.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008)

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a 2008 historical drama based on the novel of the same name by Irish writer John Boyne. Directed by Mark Herman the film stars Asa Butterfield, Jack Scanlon, David Thewlis, and Rupert Friend. The Holocaust drama explores the horror of the World War II concentration camp through the eyes of two young boys who will become good friends. One of them is the son of the camp’s Nazi commandant, while the other is a Jewish inmate who lives on the other side of the fence.

P.S. I Love You (2007)

P.S. I Love You is a 2007 drama film directed by Richard LaGravenese. The film is based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Cecelia Ahern and stars Hilary Swank, Gerard Butler, Lisa Kudrow and James Marsters. The touching film is about Gerry and Holly, a young couple in love. Gerry’s life ended too soon due to an illness and Holly receives a cake on her thirtieth birthday and the first of the many messages left for her by her late husband. Gerry finishes each tape recorded message with “P.S. I Love You.” A must-watch for anyone who loves timeless love stories.
