DIY Floor Decor: How To Paint Over Vinyl Floor

Many people aren’t aware that even textured vinyl flooring can be painted and turned into something completely new. It sure comes as a great relief to find out that you don’t have to change the vinyl flooring that you own from scratch (even though it’s old and weary and you hate it). If you are willing to spend some time on a promising makeover, rather than spend your money on new flooring, let the tips we’ve managed to put together below be your guide.

Decide on the Colors and the New Pattern

You can choose to simply refresh and change the color of the flooring and make it look brand new, but a much better option is to play with patterns by simply putting stripes in a color that contrasts the base. The basic color should be the light one and the stripes can have a darker shade so that you can be able to attain a more sophisticated look in the space you are fixing. Make sure that the paint you use is porch floor paint that is made for floors where feet will get busy and therefore – durable.

Prepare the Floor Area

Clear all the items from the area and plan to keep them away for a few days. Next thing you ought to do is to completely clean the floor area using a heavy cleaner. The more you focus on removing all the dust and dirt possible, the better the results. If you don’t have a heavy duty cleaner handy, use a regular one instead.

One Coat of Primer

The prime should be poured directly on the floor and then you can distribute it around using a paint roller. One coat of prime should be enough and after you finish spreading it equally, let it dry for around 6-7 hours.

The Base is Here to Stay

Once your floor is dry again, it is time to paint the entire area with the color you’ve chosen to be your base. In order to conceal the old color completely, it is recommendable to do it twice. Resist the temptation to save time and plan ahead to put two coats of paint because once you put the stripes on and look at your new textured vinyl flooring, there’s no going back.

Stripe Boredom Away

Before you start using the second color, put painter’s tape so that you can give direction for the pattern to be and, yes, put yet another coat of paint from the base color and seal the deal with its firmness. Now’s the time to paint the stripes you’ve created with the second color of darker hue. It’s going to look so fun and refreshing and you can already feel it! After you floor is dry again, simply remove the painter’s tape and, Tada!- Your lovely new vinyl flooring is here and ready to impress!
